Shanghai, China, June 3, 2008: For the fifth consecutive year, IBHS (International Branded Hotels of Shanghai) members, sponsors and their guests hit the golf course in the name of charity for the annual IBHS Charity Golf Tournament which was held at the Shanghai West Course on Friday May 30th, 2008.

The IBHS is an organization that unites Shanghai’s best 4 and 5 star international hotels with a membership of 62 hotels and over 27,000 guest rooms in the city. The IBHS is a division of the Shanghai Hotel Industry Association and has been meeting on a regular basis since it began back in 1993 with just nine member hotels.

This year’s event raised and lived up to its reputation with many of Shanghai’s leading hotels vying to outdo each other by theming their sponsored hole and offering refreshments from satays and steinlagers to cocktails and pastries.
Each player also received a lucky dip offering spectacular accommodation and dining vouchers from many of the member hotels. In addition, players raised just over RMB174,000 from the raffle prizes which included trips to Kuala Lumpur, bottles of Champagne and a Sony Cybershot,

While no one managed to hit a hole in one and win a car , the winning team was the Hotel Equatorial team.

Chairman of the IBHS Mr William Hall, general manager of the Hotel Equatorial Shanghai commented “It is great to see the hotels come together for this worthy cause and we would like to thank our major sponsors: Swisseau, CWS Boco, Summergate Wines, ASC wines, Emporio Asia, Fidelio, Intertouch, Coca Cola, Air Union Insurance Brokers, Shanghai General Motors, China Economic Review, HBO, AXN/Sony, Shanghai Racquet Club, Zweisel, Grand Hotels Magazine, Lloyds Register and Mr Clean. It takes a great deal of effort to host a day like this and we would not be able to do it without their generous support.”

IBHS Emergency Donation to the Chinese Red Cross

The tragic news unfolding following the earthquake on Monday 12th May 2008 in the Sichuan region of China goes from bad to worse. Reports on the TV news channels and press are just heart breaking and the IBHS Board on behalf of the membership unanimously agreed to a donation of RMB225,000 to be made to the China Red Cross. This donation was made at noon on the 16th May. Chairman William Hall said " I know most of our membership hotels have taken charity action either on an individual or group basis but as representatives of the international hotels here in Shanghai we wished to add our contribution. Our thoughts are very much with those less fortunate than ourselves and we extend this helping hand to assist this devastated region."

This sum matches the amount paid in March of this year to the Shanghai Charity Foundation.

For immediate release

Shanghai, China, April 14 2008: More than 30 karaoke singers from some of Shanghai’s leading 4 and 5 star hotels competed in the annual IBHS (International Branded Hotels of Shanghai) Karaoke competition held on April 8, in the Lyceum Theatre, Shanghai.

The IBHS is an organization that unites Shanghai’s best 4 and 5 star international hotels with a membership of 60 hotels and over 26,000 guest rooms in the city. The IBHS is a division of the Shanghai Hotel Industry Association and has been meeting on a regular basis since it began back in 1993 with just nine member hotels.
This is the third year that the IBHS has hosted the karaoke competition and the caliber of the contestants continues to grow each year.

From the 30 contestants who initially competed in the two semi-finals, the judges had a tough job of picking the ten finalists. This year’s finalists went all out with some even incorporating dancers into their performances.
However there can only ever be one winner and this year the winner was from Elton Lu from Pudong Shangri La; 2nd place went to John Yao from JW Mandarin Hotel and 3rd place went to Phil Chen from the JW Marriott Hotel Shanghai.
The atmosphere in the Lyceum Theatre was overwhelming with supporters from each of the contestants hotels there to cheer their fellow contestant on.

IBHS Members go from the Past to the Present

IBHS members enjoyed a members meeting with a difference as the venue was the hotel that was established in Shanghai in 1858, a property that  has had a long and colorful history; some of the first electric lights in Shanghai, the first phone call made in Shanghai and the first stock exchange in China after 1949 in Shanghai were at this hotel. The hotel - the Astor Hotel - billed itself as the Waldorf Astoria of the Orient Peter Hibbard, the eminent speaker, local historian and author, gave a presentation on the hotel scene of the early 1900's .
